Methylation: Beyond Folate & B12 | Second Opinion Physician

Category: Methylation: Beyond Folate & B12

Methylation depends on more than folate and B12. The key marker is the SAM to SAH ratio, which shows how efficiently methylation is running. When SAH is low, methylation works more smoothly. Supporting alkalinity helps this process by improving the body’s acid–base balance and allowing better transfer of methyl groups. Efficient methylation relies on healthy mitochondria to convert methionine into SAM, good digestion for methionine absorption, and nutrients such as vitamin B6 and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) to move homocysteine through detox pathways. Betaine (TMG) can help recycle homocysteine back into methionine when needed. A balanced diet that includes sulfur-rich foods like eggs, onions, and cruciferous vegetables, moderate protein, and plenty of mineral-rich vegetables supports this process. Key factors such as creatine, glycine, vitamin D, zinc and copper balance, and gut health all play a role in how well methylation functions in daily life.
