Researcher, Author and Physician Educator

Dr. William J. Walsh is an internationally recognized expert in nutritional medicine and a key scientist in the field of nutrient-based psychiatry and nutritional medicine. He has spent the past 30 years developing biochemical treatments for various mental disorders and has made significant contributions to the field of psychiatric medicine. Dr. Walsh's groundbreaking studies have led to the discovery of undermethylation and copper/zinc imbalances in autism, metallothionein protein depletion in autism, and copper overload in post-partum depression. He has also identified five biochemical subtypes of clinical depression and developed the Walsh Theory of Schizophrenia.

Dr. Walsh has given over 200 presentations at regional, national, and international conferences and symposiums, including the American Psychiatric Association, the U.S. Senate, and the National Institutes of Mental Health. Additionally, he has authored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and scientific reports and holds five patents. He leads medical practitioner training programs in advanced, drug-free biochemical/nutrient therapies worldwide, helping to expand the use of nutrient-based psychiatry and nutritional medicine around the world.

Dr. Walsh's journey began while working at Argonne National Laboratory in the 1970s, where he organized a prison volunteer program that led to the development of individualized nutrient protocols to normalize body and brain chemistry. He collaborated with the renowned Carl C. Pfeiffer, MD, PhD, a pioneer in the field of nutritional research therapy, and studied more than 30,000 patients with mental disorders, acquiring an unparalleled database of more than 3 million chemical assays during his clinical and research work.

Dr. Walsh has conducted chemical analysis of more than 25 serial killers and mass murderers, including Charles Manson, Richard Speck, James Oliver Huberty, Patrick Sherrill, and Arthur Shawcross, assisting medical examiners, coroners, Scotland Yard, and the FBI in these forensics studies. He has also designed nutritional programs for Olympic athletes, NBA players, major league baseball players, a heavyweight boxing champion, PGA and LPGA golfers, and others.

Dr. Walsh's book, Nutrient Power: Heal Your Biochemistry and Heal Your Brain, published by Skyhorse Publishing in 2012, outlines his evidence-based nutrient therapy system for patients with mood, behavioral, and cognitive disorders. The Walsh Protocol involves a series of tests that are used to identify nutrient imbalances and other biochemical abnormalities that may be contributing to a patient's symptoms. Based on the test results, a customized nutrient therapy plan is developed to address the specific imbalances identified.

Dr. Walsh founded the Walsh Research Institute in 2008 to help advance the development of nutrient-based psychiatry and nutritional medicine, and to provide training and education to physicians interested in implementing the Walsh Protocol. His interest in this area of medicine was sparked by his work with prison inmates who had been diagnosed with mental illnesses. Dr. Carl Pfeiffer, a pioneer in the field of orthomolecular psychiatry, was Dr. Walsh's collaborator for many years, and they conducted numerous research studies and publications together. After Dr. Pfeiffer's death in 1988, Dr. Walsh continued to develop the Walsh Protocol and build on the work they had done together.

The protocol has been successful in treating a range of conditions, including depression, anxiety, ADHD, schizophrenia, psychosis, Post Partum Depression, OCD, ODD, and bipolar disorder. The Walsh Research Institute continues to conduct research in this area and provide training and education to healthcare providers interested in implementing the Walsh Protocol.
