Ceruloplasmin

Ceruloplasmin is an protein globulin that binds copper and delivers it to the cells while neutralizing its ionic free radical form. This globulin plays an important role in preventing copper overload or oxidative stress from copper as higher ratio of ceruloplasmin to copper reduces the free radical form of elemental copper. About 70% or more of total serum copper is bound with ceruloplasmin.  Excessive unbound copper leads to mood disorders to a large part, because free copper causes dopamine to convert to norepinephrine. Dr Walsh believe that ceruloplasmin, a protective metallothionein is one of the Three Musketeers of antixoidant protection. When levels and ratios are within a healthy functional range, the brain has a better balance of dopamine and norepinephrine. This tests is done in conjunction with a serum copper and plasma zinc test in order that ratios and oxidative stress levels can be determined.
